COMPETITION NOW CLOSED FOR 2009-2010 ACADEMIC YEAR: Information included below for reference
Deadline: Thursday, September 17, 2009
The Advisory Board of the Miller Institute for Basic Research in Science invites applications for the Miller Research
Professorships for Academic Year 2010-2011. The purpose of the Professorship is to release members of the faculty
from teaching and administrative duties and allow them to pursue research. Appointees are encouraged to follow
promising leads that may develop in the course of their research effort whether or not they fall within the original
research outline. Applications are judged competitively. It is anticipated that between five to ten awards will be made
for the 2010-2011 Academic Year.
ELIGIBILITY: The Professorships are available only
to members of the faculties of the University of
California, but are not restricted to members of the
Berkeley campus. It is, however, required that research
be conducted on the Berkeley campus. Applicants who
are not members of the Berkeley faculty should seek
sponsorship of an academic department at Berkeley
before making an application and need to submit
endorsement letters from the Berkeley campus
Department Chair as well as their Home campus
Department Chair.
TERM OF APPOINTMENT: The term of
appointment is either the full academic year, beginning
July 1, 2010, or one semester of Academic Year 2010-
2011, the semester to be determined by the applicant in
consultation with the department. Semester
appointments are from July 1, 2010 through December
31, 2010 or January 1, 2011 through June 30, 2011.
Applicants desiring a full year appointment must
provide adequate justification for the need of a full year
rather than a semester.
SALARY: Professorial salary and benefits for a
regular 9/12 academic year or semester will be paid
by the Miller Institute. The Institute covers any range
or merit increases as they occur. NOTE: Miller
Professors do not accrue time towards sabbatical leave.
(See APM 740-11-h, Regents’ Standing Order 103.4.)
REQUIREMENTS OF THE PROFESSORSHIP: Appointees are expected to devote full time and effort
to research and to decline administrative and teaching
assignments, except for the direction of graduate
students. Members are expected to attend the Institute’s
weekly luncheons and social activities and to informally mentor the Miller Research Fellows. It is
not appropriate for Miller Professors to give more than
one or two outside lectures during the term of their
professorship, nor is it appropriate for them to accept
other employment. The Miller bequest requires that the
research be performed on the Berkeley campus, so no
extended absences from the campus should be planned
for the term of the appointment. Travel to meetings of
learned societies, to the extent appropriate during a
normal academic term, is permitted. The Miller
Institute office must be notified of absences away from
campus, as is required of all faculty members.
Applicants planning extensive travel should consider a
one-semester appointment coupled with sabbatical
leave for a second semester.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Applications for the
Academic Year 2010-2011 must be received by the
Miller Institute no later than 4:00 p.m. on Thursday,
September 17, 2009. Please submit the application
packet before deadline whenever possible to allow for
adequate administrative review and reference
evaluation. The original application packet can be
delivered or mailed to the Institute. The Miller
Institute's address is 2536 Channing Way, Mail Code
#5190.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF AWARDS: Candidates will be notified of the results in December.
Questions about the Miller Research Professorship program may be directed to the Institute's office at (510) 642-4088 or
millerinstitute@berkeley.edu. Information is also available on the web at
